Pepita Cantilever

2024

Giving textile an independent shape is an essential aspect in my exploration of traditional craft. I found the Cantilever Chair on the street in winter time with wet weather conditions and thought what a beautiful design classic. The leather was very worn out and I immidiatly imagined it with a woven structure instead. The chair became my weaving frame and got a new life. The structure of the surface seduces to touch and conveys tactile sensuality. The chair is part of my vision to elevate textile fabric to an independent object that bridges and connects spaces, interiors, art and design.

The object consists of an oversized weave with a black and white houndstooth pattern. Using 1 cm strong doubled up cotton rope it is woven directly onto the steel structure. The Cantilever Chair is an found object from the street. The original seat, arm and back rest have been removed, the steel has been cleaned, surfacial rust removed, the tube end covers replaced and new chair glides added. There are still some signes of time and weather which give the chair a unique patina, inspired by the Japanese Wabi Sabi concept of beauty.
